Sheep and goat meat Imports
The imports stood at 67K tonnes in 2017, picking up by 2% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when import increased by 16% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, sheep and goat meat imports reached its maximum volume of 68K tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, it stood at a somewhat lower level.
In value terms, sheep and goat meat imports amounted to $404M in 2017. Overall, it indicated a prominent expansion from 2007 to 2017: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, sheep and goat meat imports increased by +123.5% against its level of 2007. Over the period under review, sheep and goat meat imports attained its maximum level in 2017, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.
Sheep and goat meat Imports By Country
The U.S. was the major importer of goat meat in the world, with the volume of imports accounting for 21K tonnes, which was approx. 31% of total imports in 2017. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (9.5K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (7.6K tonnes), Qatar (3.7K tonnes), Taiwan, Chinese (3.5K tonnes), and Oman (3.4K tonnes), together making up 41% share of total imports. The following importers – Canada (2.9K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (2K tonnes), South Korea (1.8K tonnes), Portugal (1.6K tonnes), Trinidad and Tobago (1.5K tonnes), and France (1.4K tonnes) together made up 16% of total imports.
Imports into the U.S. increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% from 2007 to 2017. At the same time, South Korea (+25.7%), Saudi Arabia (+12.4%), Portugal (+7.1%), Canada (+6.8%), Oman (+3.5%), Trinidad and Tobago (+3.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+3.1%), and France (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest growing importer in the world, with a CAGR of +25.7% from 2007-2017. China, Hong Kong SAR, Qatar, and Taiwan, Chinese experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2007 to 2017, the share of Oman, Canada, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. decreased by -1.5%, -2.1%, -2.3%, -3.7%, -7.8%, and -16.1% percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the U.S. ($148M) constitutes the largest market for imported goat meat worldwide, making up 36% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Saudi Arabia ($49M), with the share of 12% of global imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with the share of 12%.
From 2007 to 2017, the average annual growth rate of value of sheep and goat meat imports in the U.S. totaled +14.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: Saudi Arabia (+19.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+10.9% per year).
Sheep and goat meat Import Prices By Country
The average sheep and goat meat import price stood at $6,016 per tonne in 2017, surging by 9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017 it increased at an average annual rate of +4.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when import increased by 17% against the previous year level. Global import price peaked in 2017, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.
Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was China, Hong Kong SAR ($8,223 per tonne), while Qatar ($3,217 per tonne) was among the lowest.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by China, Hong Kong SAR (+10.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
