As Dominik Hauser’s directorial debut, DEAD SQUAD: TEMPLE OF THE UNDEAD<\/em> follows a friends’ getaway on a tropical island, river rafting through the exotic jungle. Their paradise troubles begin when they carelessly veering off the main river onto a narrowing tributary to stop and rest. Realizing that their rafts have joined the river currents, the friends embark on foot to try and find their way back. But along the way, they discover a large ruined temple, and decide to go into the lightless edifice and explore.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The film’s musical score, also composed by Hauser, serves to enhance the drama of the story, humanizing the interaction of characters and intensifying the emotional anxiety, shock, and terror of the zombie incursion. Unsure if the friends will ever escape the temple of the undead, the film’s score enhances the characters by associating each with specific musical motifs and themes that underline behavior and emotive reactions.<\/p>\n

In the beginning of DEAD SQUAD<\/em>, there are a few musical nods to the ‘80s with a couple synthy throwback cues. As DEAD SQUAD<\/em> continues, the score uses more of a percussive, orchestral vein, to create a sense of timeliness. But at the end of the film, DEAD SQUAD<\/em> features a score that is a hybrid mix of digital orchestra samples performed largely on keyboard. Alongside are live musicians, who enhance the sampled orchestra music and provide the score with more of an organic sound.<\/p>\n

The end credits begin with the song, “Death Show,” written by Hauser and Alex Acosta, who also rapped against the grungy guitar riff. The concluding credits play over the second song, “We Are Not Afraid,” a pre-existing song licensed from Basement Strippers. “I thought the lyrics, ‘we are not afraid,’ would be perfect and the whole vibe of that song is really fun. It made a good end piece for the film,” stated Hauser.<\/p>\n

Capturing the obligatory zombie blood-splatter, DEAD SQUAD<\/em> is unique for its framing story. Based on real events, the stylized ‘80s horror-adventure utilizes the basic concept of the Nazi\/CIA underground facility for experimentation, which was responsible for creating and then unleashing the zombie hordes to menace our heroes in the first place.<\/p>\n
